As the night turns up, neon lights light up in Taipei’s Ximending, highlighting the flow of people and the ringing of laughter. Street music intertwined with sounds from conversations and the crisp clinking of glass sets the main melody that leads this place. In the heart of the city, the gay bars stand like islets of light, embracing every soul yearning to be understood.

He pushes open the ungllamorous door, and out wafts a heady mix of perfume, tobacco, and sweet cocktail fumes. Some people wear bright flashy outfits; others merely use plain T-shirts and jeans. There, in that place, everyone shares one unsaid similarity: the need for self-expression and acknowledgment.
Johnny is working behind the counter at Café Dalida, concocting some specialized cocktail for one of the patrons. This young bartender moves with practiced ease; his gestures exude a lot of confidence, like that of an artist. Every drink is like an emotion encapsulated-sweet, tangy, a little bitter, with a hint of freshness. A customer inquires in hushed tones, “Drag show tonight?”
“Johnny nods, smiling, the knowing glint bright in his eyes, aware of just about what this guest awaits-a dazzling and liberating performance.

At 9 PM, the music changes, becoming an upbeat tune; the crowd converges to the center of the venue. The drag queens come to life with their dramatic makeup and sparkling costumes amidst the venue. Every move they made was intense, like shouting on stage: this is our world; no prejudice, only complete happiness and acceptance. From the audience burst loud clapping with sounds of whistles, and eyes sparkled-eyes shining free and united.

At night, the streets of Ximending are just highly lighted and bustled with all kinds of activities. In front of Hero Bar, several just-met friends sat and told stories to each other. One traveler listened silently; he probably doesn’t understand what these people have been through, but in this foreign yet warm environment, he feels extraordinarily at ease. No one here cares about where you come from or questions your choices. Slowly, hearts open and begin to really resonate with one another, naturally. Under the night sky, gay bars are tender corners of Ximending. The testimony to and haven in their existence is a tale itself. Every soul that walks in-seeker of youth or one that has come into their own, yet carrying scars-can have a moment of reprieve under this soft light.

Deep in the night, Ximending is a silent hymn, actually humming unsung chords of misinterpreted love and dreams.
